The majority of adults in Ireland agree that not all heroes wear capes with 77% of Irish adults saying that teachers in Ireland are everyday heroes. That’s according to new research from One4all, Ireland’s leading Gift Card company, who asked 750 adults* about the significance educators make on the lives of their students.
Thank you, Teacher!
Almost all adults in Ireland recognise the important role teachers play, with 99% of those polled agreeing that teachers can have a significant positive impact on the course of a student’s life. So much so that if they were given the opportunity, 71% of adults would like to go back and thank a childhood teacher, with the top reasons being – for giving them encouragement (29%), for being a source of inspiration (15%) and for giving extra support on a difficult subject (11%).
To infinity and beyond
It seems that teachers often go out of their way when it comes to their students, with 69% of parents of primary school children in Ireland polled revealing that they have directly experienced a teacher going above and beyond for their child. The most common reasons teachers give extra help include – additional support with learning difficulties, addressing bullying and offering a helping hand during a troubling time at home. It’s safe to say the nations teachers are treasured for their good work with 69% of parents saying they are more than happy with their children’s current class teacher and 22% saying they are happy.
The picture of children dragging their heels to school is long gone. When asked whether their child/children like going to school, over half of parents of primary school going kids (51%) say their child/children love it, while 31% responded that their child may initially complain but they love it once they’re there.
According to the One4all research, 41% of parents say their children adore their teacher and 37% say they like them, so it’s no wonder that the majority of primary school children (62%) speak about their teacher every single day. When parents in Ireland were asked what attributes make such a great teacher, patience came out at number one (21%), followed by supportiveness (19%) and communication skills (12%).
9 in 10 of parents polled say they will give their child’s teacher a gift to mark the end of the school year, with a gift card or voucher being the most popular present of choice (44%), followed by chocolate or sweets (14%) and an ornament or trinket (11%). While 3 in 4 of parents say they will give a personal gift, 15% of respondents will pool together with other parents to gift collaboratively.
Commenting on the survey findings Aoife Davey, Group Marketing Manager at One4all Ireland, said:
“It’s wonderful to see how much people in Ireland value and appreciate our teachers. It seems that teachers truly are our everyday superheroes and the fact that 71% of respondents would like to go back and thank a childhood teacher if given the opportunity, really reinforces that.
