How To Shop The Sales
Sales shopping, that time of year when we become anything the sale rail demands us to be. Am I a shoe size 36? With 50 to 70 per cent off biker boots and stilettos, I am now. Can I pull off a strapless bodycon dress? With up to 60 per cent off designer gowns, of course I can.
Do you want to avoid financial disaster this sale season? Check out our sales shopping rules.
1. Don’t be seduced by the discount
Nothing is a bargain if it’s going to hang in your wardrobe, unworn. If you wouldn’t pay full price for it, leave it on the rail.
2. Be smart with your purchases
What are the gaps in your wardrobe that need filling? Make smart investments, whether that be a cosy jacket, good winter boots, or a strong handbag. Avoid reduced items that you need a partner for (chances are, you won’t find it).
3. Check your social calendar
Does your social calendar consist of weddings and big parties? If so, the sales are a great opportunity to pick up occasion wear with big savings (prevents your future-self panicking and picking up a dress for twice the price).
4. Inspect before purchasing
Remember, sales items are clothes that have been on the shop floor for months – they’ve been pulled, tugged at, and tried on by many. Before you make the decision to add anything to your purchasing list, scrutinise the quality – look for holes, pen marks, makeup marks, snags, stains, etc.
5. Only buy something that fits
If something is too big or too small, forget about it. Don’t buy anything ill-fitting with the intention of getting it tailored (let’s face it, that’s not going to happen).
6. Think about next season
A few sales purchases can add up to one or two new-season items. Think carefully about what you want more.
