2020 is officially the year to embrace a vegan diet. The evidence? Chefs at the Beverly Hilton served an entirely plant-based menu to the stars attending the 77th Annual Golden Globe Awards. Hollywood’s finest such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Jennifer Lopez, and Scarlett Johansson dined on chilled golden beet soup, a main course of King Oyster Mushroom scallops and a vegan opera dome with praline Gunaja crumble and caramelised hazelnuts for dessert (we need this recipe!). During his acceptance speech for his Best Actor Award at the ceremony, Joker star Joaquin Phoenix, who is vegan, heralded the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s (HFPA) decision to offer a plant-based menu, saying: ‘I’d like to thank the Hollywood Foreign press Association for recognising and acknowledging the link between animal agriculture and climate change. It really sends a powerful message.’
Following in its footsteps, the Critics’ Choice Awards (CCA) also served a vegan menu to attendees, a decision Joey Berlin, CEO of the CCA, said was made to be ‘mindful of the impact that our event has on the environment.’
Whether you’re trying Veganuary or looking to make a long-term lifestyle change, plant-based diets can positively impact both our health and the environment. And purchasing ready-made options or making some from scratch is now much easier, with supermarkets increasing their vegan range.
